Highlights

I am a former elementary teacher, with degrees from Winona State University and the University of Minnesota. I published a number of magazine articles and wrote some fiction (as yet unpublished) before I wrote The Bermuda Triangle. This topic interested me because, with my family, I had sailed there several times. Then, believing in what this publisher was doing with this series, on book just followed another. Dealing with Death gave me the opportunity to objectively explore a subject that we rarely wnat to think about. I was a Co-Advisor for the MN Chapter of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators for six years. Each January I teach an adult class in writing for children in Florida.

Presentations

I talk about my reasons for writing, the challenge of going beyond fact to make the material interesting, how a writer does this by incorporating dramatic anecdotes, fascinating details, catchy titles, clear graphics, and illuminating illustrations. I stress the responsibility of the writer to be thorough in his or her research, and tell how a writer goes about doing this research. If there is time I talk about working with an editor, and I show rough drafts and galleys. I prefer to talk to people fifth grade to adult, who have lots of questions, hoping to inspire an exchange of ideas and writing experiences.

Fees

Negotiable. I do one or two hours, not a full day.
