Highlights Kids love to find out how books are written, how pictures are created, and the publishing process that puts those books on the shelf. As an author/illustrator, I make visuals and art a big part of my presentations on writing, and get the kids involved in a hands-on art lesson that has successfully worked for grades 1-8. I enjoy presenting to large assemblies as well as small groups, and also do a bookmaking week where children write, illustrate, and present to parents their own hardcover picture books. Please contact jean@daytonbookings.com to inquire about booking Lynne Jonell for your school, conference, or event. |

Presentations For Schools
The following presentations work for large groups as well as individual classrooms. Equipment needed: microphone, screen, overhead projector for art lesson. Lynne uses her own laptop and projector for slide presentation.
Elementary – Middle School (by grade level)
K-1 Slide presentation with props. Includes 3 readings and conversation between children and author to introduce each story.
2-8 Grade-appropriate slide presentation on the nature of creativity, and the sometimes bumpy path to becoming an author and illustrator. Includes hands-on art lesson and Q & A session.
4-8 Bravemole talk and slide presentation, appropriate for 9/11. Includes behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the illustrations, and a Q & A session.
Bookmaking Week
4-6 A project for an entire grade level; usually 3-4 classes. The children, with hands-on tutorials and feedback from Lynne, write and illustrate hardcover picture books which they can then read to children in lower grades.
- Day 1: Writing tutorial, rough drafts
- Day 2: Art tutorial, final drafts, begin illustrations
- Day 3: Paste-up, pagination and poster design tutorial
(For days 1-3 and day 5, Lynne presents to each class for 20 minutes, gives individual help and feedback for 40 minutes.)
- Day 4: Lynne presents assemblies for the entire school
(Bookmaking classes continue work on books and each child writes a paragraph about what was memorable this week)
- Day 5: Complete illustrations, paste-up books. One or two children from each class selected to read their paragraphs for parents at the evening celebration.
- Evening Celebration: Scheduled for the following week. Invite parents to a short presentation, "meet the authors", view and read the books on display, and have refreshments. (If school is in the Twin Cities area, Lynne will attend celebration and sign books on this evening. If not, schedule book signing time for Friday.)
For Teachers:
In-service: Lynne can offer a 30 minute in-service presentation for elementary teachers on the use of fantasy in approaching difficult subjects, particularly geared to the use of Bravemole in the classroom.
Teacher Workshops: Lynne can offer a one or two day teacher workshop on running a bookmaking week themselves. A one day workshop covers the nuts and bolts of the bookmaking week. A two day workshop deepens understanding with a writers' workshop specifically targeted for picture books, an art lesson geared toward non-artists who must teach it to students, and practice sessions.
Writing Workshops:
Lynne has taught at the celebrated Loft Literary Center in Minneapolis for eight years, and is currently a Loft Master Track advisor in children's writing. Many of her students have become published authors since taking her courses. She would be happy to design a writers' workshop for your specific needs.
Speaking Engagements:
Lynne has been invited to speak at conferences for writers, teachers, and media specialists; has addressed community groups, both large and small; and has been a guest lecturer at high schools and universities. She is particularly interested in speaking about the creative process and the use of fantasy in children's literature. |
