Highlights Yum, kolaches for breakfast! The warm smell of rolls wakes Karrie, who knows it's Anka's day to clean the house. Anka hails from Czechoslovakia, and makes a game of everyday chores. Themes that deal with immigration, mixing of cultures, and caring adults are woven into delightful possibilities for presentations to young children. As a teacher, licensed in Early Childhood, K-6, and parenting, I've used this book at all levels. Even as adults, we are reminded of the simple things that bind hearts together. |

Presentations Early childhood - 1st grades: I read or tell the story, children act out parts, we sing and dance. 2nd - 4th grades: I read the story, share the character of the "real Anka," emphasizing the strength of family stories. Depending onthe unit of study, I may help children develop questions for parents and grandparents to encourage the writing of family stories, or we may do character writing exercises, offbeat-to-serious, that the students can use in future stories. I'll look at their writing in progress. I will bring original art used in the book, also slides of Czech Village in Iowa. A big hit is the kolaches a parent usually volunteers to bring! |
