Highlights

My goal is to inspire the reluctant writer in all my students. Writing is a process of self-discovery. Each of my residencies is geared to empower students to become more confident of their own creativity and aware of their individual talents so that they want to continue writing. No matter what writing activities I choose in the classroom, I focus on writing as a process. We begin with pre-writing activities that help students generate ideas. I try to make students feel comfortable about writing and sharing their ideas by utilizing writing projects that build on their own experiences and insights.

Awards

1st Place, Voice of the Land Essay Contest, Milkweed Press, 2000 1st Place, Novel-in-Progress Award, Society for Children's Book Writers, 1989.

Presentations

Poetry workshops: I love teaching poetry in the schools because I have found that even students who do not identify themselves as writers can begin to hear their own voices in poetry. I prefer to work with students for three to five days, one hour per day. I work with all ages and I have developed different approaches depending on the age group and writing level of the students. Fiction Workshops: For younger students, I use storytelling, theater activities, and pre-writing games to lead students into their own writing activities. With older students, I focus on approaches that combine personal exploration with narrative structure. I work with various genres to develop a writing project. Creative Non-Fiction: I have a developed wonderful essay writing activities that deal with such topics as "Heroes," "Home," and "Places We Love," and "Time," all of which utilize the student's own experiences, language, and voice. Teacher and Parent Workshops: I have developed a series of writing activities that help teachers in the classroom and parents at home to motivate their students in writing.
